Wellness + Work

Work can be a stressful, exhausting experience. Let’s face it, we’ve all had the Sunday scaries, dreading heading back to work Monday morning. But with a few easy tricks, you can improve your wellness, boost your productivity, lower stress, and be an overall better (and happier) worker.

1. Start your day off right

Find a morning routine that gets you excited to get out of bed. Wake up an hour or two earlier so you have plenty of time to do a fun activity before you have to log on or head to work. Go to a yoga class, read your book, make a big healthy breakfast, find something you enjoy doing. Meditation is also proven to decrease your stress and keep you more focused throughout the day. My favorite app is headspace, all you need is 10 minutes to complete a guided meditation.

2. Create an inspiring work environment

Make your workspace a place your excited to go in the morning. Keep your workspace clean and a clutter-free zone. Make it comfortable with a nice comfy chair and include items that make you feel inspired. I recently purchased a Himalayan salt lamp to keep at my desk and I swear it makes such a difference. It not only reduces toxins in the air but helps keep me focused and less stressed. This is the one I purchased on Amazon.

3. Take breaks

This is a big one for me. There are many days I look up at the clock and can’t believe how late it’s gotten, the day has slipped away and I haven’t left my desk once. I’ve created a routine of always taking my dog Oakley for a walk during lunch. It’s my time to take a break from my office chair and computer screen, that way I come back refreshed and ready to work. If you don’t have a dog nearby, try taking a walk while listening to Audible or a podcast.

4. Be grateful

Reminding yourself what you have to be thankful for is a great way to reduce stress. Take a moment to put life into perspective and remember all the good in your life. Try The Five-Minute Journal, it’s a great way to take a break and focus on the good in your life.

5. Surround yourself with plants

Having indoor plants are proven to purify the air, improve health, and sharpens your focus. They also make for great desk decor. Why wouldn’t you have a little plant friend at your desk? Here is a list of low maintenance indoor plants that are easy to take care of and give you these amazing benefits. I personally have a money tree in my office, mostly for good luck.

6. Try desk yoga

Long hours sitting at a desk hunched over a computer can take a toll on your body. When I don’t have time to take a walk or leave my desk I do a quick 5-minute session of desk yoga. It not only gives your body but your brain a much-needed break from the day. Here are some moves you can try.

7. Leave work at home

At the end of the day, the best thing you can do is leave your work at work! There is no use worrying about what you have to do while you are lying in bed trying to go to bed at night. Turn off email notifications so you are not bothered with emails that will just give you unnecessary stress. Try to be more mindful and appreciate the break you have, especially on Sundays.

Just try to remember a job is just a job. There will always be stressful moments and annoying clients but hopefully, these little tricks will help you deal with stress in a healthier way and make work a more enjoyable place to be.
