How to make passive income as a creative

There are only so many hours in the day you can dedicate to your business. And if your work involves imagination (and it does!), you know creativity has its limits, too. Whether your calendar is fully booked and you want the freedom to do more of what you love, or you’re still building your client base and need an alternative revenue stream, creating passive income is a powerful way to reach your goals.

What is passive income?

Passive income is income that requires minimal effort to maintain. This kind of revenue makes it easy to develop multiple income streams, giving you peace of mind and freedom to focus on aspects of your business that you love.

And the one thing  you’ll truly love about passive income? It frees up space in your calendar so that you can prioritize things outside of your business–family, friends, travel, a new hobby, or that one thing on your bucket that requires time AND money.

Curious about how you can generate passive income as a creative business owner? Read on to discover how you can start making more money with minimal effort.

Passive income ideas for creatives:

From website graphics and Canva templates to self-paced courses and affiliate programs, there are many opportunities to generate passive income as creative business owners. Here are 14 ideas to get you started:

Create the perfect offer.

Before launching something new, do your research to ensure that you can convert your idea into a digital product that your target audience will buy from you. Check the supply & demand ratio in your niche and talk to your audience about their needs, preferences, and what is important to them. Your market research and audience’s feedback can help you create a dynamic offering that they’ll eagerly purchase.

Design your launch strategy.

Every successful launch is backed by a carefully-planned strategy. While your launch strategy will be unique to you and your digital product, start by building hype around your service before releasing it to the public. Forbes recommends highlighting your credibility during this stage and centering your messaging around the client instead of the offering.

Once you share your new digital product, consider offering a limited-time deal to create urgency and encourage your audience to buy from you.

Establish a simple sales funnel.

Part of your launch strategy should include a sales funnel that brings your audience from knowing nothing about your offering to eagerly clicking the ‘buy now’ button.

Your sales funnel doesn’t need to be complicated. Make sure it includes these elements:

  • Fresh value & messaging that establishes you as a credible source.
  • Empathy that shows you understand the problem that your digital product helps them solve.
  • A vivid transformation of how your offering will help them improve their situation.
  • Messaging that sets your business and offering apart from your industry.

Create a content marketing plan.

Do you want to promote and successfully sell your new offering without coming across as salesy? With a solid content marketing plan, you can use social media, blog posts, newsletters, podcasts, or YouTube videos to warm up cold leads and gain the trust of you and audience.

Content marketing provides space to consistently share your offer in a genuine way, bring clarity to its benefits, and show your audience how they can achieve their goals through your product.

Adjust your messaging to improve your sales.

If you’ve launched your offering and you’re not reaching your sales goals, reassess your messaging by asking yourself these questions:

  • Is my messaging concisely sharing the benefits of my offering?
  • Am I attracting the right audience?
  • Am I introducing the sale too soon or too late in the funnel?
  • Can I share my offering with newer or larger audiences?
